Today we are going to talk about one of my favorite grounding techniques when having a panic attack. I will not claim that this will work every single time, but I can say it helps. Trust me...I know from experience.
5-4-3-2-1
- What are 5 things you can see? This could be the shadows on the wall, the texture of the ceiling or the way the light shines through the window
- What are 4 things you can feel? The fluffy blanket on your bed or your favorite stuffed animal
- What are 3 things you can hear? The television, your S/O playing his video game, the cat chirping because she sees a bug
- What are 2 things you can smell? Your favorite perfume or dinner cooking in the kitchen
- What is 1 thing you can taste? Keep mints, candy or gum handy. Pop one in your mouth and focus on the flavor.
These things are meant to distract and redirect. The intent is by the time you make it to 1, your mind is calmed and you have successfully worked through your moment of panic. I hope this helps!

I like those techniques. I read. It gets my mind somewhere else. I read anywhere from 60-100 books a year.
ReplyDeleteThat's really good! I wish I had the attention span to read that much. It takes me so long to get through one book.
DeleteI like these a lot, these could help me when having a panic attack. I have them every so often after my dad's passing.
ReplyDeleteYou should try it! Doesn't always help but some is better than none <3
